Turn theory into practice by entering one of COMAP’s modeling contests. The study of mathematics as its own subject may have started with Pythagoras, but people have been counting as a necessity of everyday life for tens of thousands of years. It follows that mathematics was invented to help us understand and manage the world around us.
COMAP’s international modeling contest opportunities at the middle school, high school, and undergraduate levels challenge students to form, organize, and manage a team to model and solve a real-world application problem and present a solution report. In addition, such contests provide an experience in which students develop interpersonal skills through teamwork, develop technical writing and communication skills, feel a sense of accomplishment, and earn an impressive resume credential.
The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)® and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM)® occurs annually.
The Middle Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MidMCM) and High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM)® occurs annually in November.
The International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IM2C)® allows two teams from each participating country/region to compete in this spring modeling competition.
The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)®, an international contest for high school students and college undergraduates, challenges teams of students to analyze, model, solve, and present solution reports to an open-ended application problem. Contest teams of up to three students address one of three problems choices: continuous mathematics, discrete mathematics, and data insights.
The Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM)® is an extension of the MCM designed to develop and advance modeling and problem-solving skills in an interdisciplinary scenario to broaden both the focus of the problems and the methods of solution. Contest teams of up to three students address one of three problems choices: operations research/network science, sustainability, and policy.
The High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM)®, an international contest for high school and middle school level students, provides teams of students with the opportunity to work together to demonstrate and improve their analysis, problem solving, modeling, and writing skills. Teams of up to four students address one of two real-world application problem choices.
The Middle Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MidMCM) is an extension of the HiMCM designed to provide middle school/level age students 14 ½ years of age and younger with a modeling and problem-solving opportunity. Teams of up to four students apply middle school level mathematics to model, develop, and communicate a solution to a real-world problem.
The International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IM2C)® promotes the teaching of mathematical modeling and applications in high school classrooms across the globe based on the firm belief that students and teachers need to experience the power of mathematics to better understand, analyze, and solve real–world problems. Countries/Regions organize local regional rounds in the spring with two teams from each participating country/region advancing to the international round of judging in May.
